Almost everything written about getting into New Zealand describes the NZeTA — filled in on a phone, approved in minutes, cheap. The waiver list it belongs to covers Japan, Singapore, the UAE, the United Kingdom and most of Europe. India is not on it. An Indian passport needs a visitor visa granted before you board, and what applicants underestimate is not the form. It is the arithmetic underneath it.
What INZ’s own India checklist puts on the list
Outward travel is a money question before it is a flight question
Immigration New Zealand publishes a checklist written specifically for applicants in India, and one line on it does something no European checklist does. It joins two things applicants treat as separate: “Evidence of your ability to fund your stay in New Zealand, and your outward travel from New Zealand”. Every document listed beneath that line is financial — sponsorship form, deposit books showing a saving history, three months of statements or payslips showing salary credits, card limits, two years of tax returns.
Read the whole page and you will not find a line that says flight itinerary. The visitor visa page frames the same requirement as a choice: “your ticket for travel out of New Zealand at the end of your stay”, or “documents, such as bank or credit card statements, that show you have enough money to buy a ticket”. New Zealand is asking whether you are equipped to leave. A ticket is one answer. A balance is another.
Nor does the question close when the visa is issued. Every time you fly in you must hold a ticket out or proof you can buy one, unless the visa says onward travel is not required.
The NZ$400 line is about money already spent, not a booking you are holding
Section H of the Visitor Visa Guide sets out two routes for an applicant with no New Zealand sponsor: NZ$1,000 per person per month, or NZ$400 per person per month and evidence that each person’s accommodation costs are already paid. A month in the country for a couple is NZ$2,000 of demonstrated funds on the first route and NZ$800 on the second — a gap wide enough that people reach for it.
- NZ$1,000 per person, per month
- Statements, payslips, card limits, tax returns
- Evidence of onward travel arrangements required too
- NZ$400 per person, per month — only if accommodation costs are already paid
- Evidence of onward travel arrangements required too
- A held reservation is a booking, not a payment — it does not open this route
Now read the second route again. Already paid. A reservation held on a booking system is not a prepayment, and we are not going to tell you otherwise; if the lower bar is what you want, the nights have to be bought. On the funds route — the one INZ’s India checklist points at — the accommodation booking does a different job. It turns “three weeks in the South Island” into named towns on named nights, which is what makes the funds figure look calculated rather than guessed.
Where a held reservation stops, and a bought ticket begins
This is the paragraph most sellers of travel documents leave out. The Visitor Visa Guide is precise about what satisfies the onward-travel requirement:
- Actual travel tickets, confirmed or open-dated, out of New Zealand to a country you have the right of entry to.
- Written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel has been booked and paid for.
- Anything demonstrating a confirmed departure — the confirmed departure of a yacht or a private aircraft is INZ’s own example.
What it is not
A purchased ticket. INZ’s guide separates those two states in writing, so use a held reservation alongside the financial evidence INZ names, not instead of it.Used that way it earns its place. “Plans to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay” is INZ’s phrasing, and it stays an assertion until something concrete carries it — a route, dated flights, a return leg that lands you back before your employer said you were due at your desk. Buying the fare outright first is a bet on a date INZ has not yet agreed to, and a Delhi–Auckland return is a lot of money to lock to the wrong week.
Insurance cannot fail this file. New Zealand is still an odd place to skip it.
New Zealand runs a no-fault accident scheme, ACC, and it covers visitors. Come off a mountain bike in Rotorua and the treatment is handled as it would be for a New Zealander. That single fact does more harm than good, because of what sits outside it. ACC does not cover illness, does not cover “disrupted travel plans or emergency travel to get you back home”, does not cover injuries in transit to or from New Zealand, and does not cover “treatment and rehabilitation when you get back home”. Its own instruction to visitors is to buy travel insurance before the trip.
Immigration New Zealand closes the other half. Its visitor guide says visitor visa holders “are not generally eligible for publicly funded health and disability services” and strongly recommends comprehensive health insurance. A chest infection on day nine in Queenstown is an illness, on a private bill, a very long way from home.
We issue insurance through an IRDAI-licensed partner and will still say the honest thing here: it is a decision about risk, not about the application. Nobody is refused for leaving that line blank.
Changing planes at Auckland is a permission of its own
New Zealand keeps a second, much shorter list for people who never leave the airport, and India is not on that one either. A passenger connecting through Auckland — the Santiago hop is the common reason — needs a transit visa or a visitor visa. INZ lists the transit visa at “from NZD $235”, decision time “80% within 1 week”, up to 24 hours, airside only, with tickets showing the transit through New Zealand.
The same page carries a line worth reading twice if your fare touches Sydney or Melbourne: if you are travelling to Australia you must also hold a valid Australian visa. Australia sets its own transit rules through its Department of Home Affairs, and INZ cannot waive them — check where an Indian passport stands there before you commit to a routing.
The reservation we would build for an Auckland trip
Auckland is the gateway; Christchurch and Wellington are where the domestic legs pick up. A workable file from Delhi or Mumbai is a return through one Asian hub — Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong — in to Auckland, out of Auckland or Christchurch, dated to your leave letter rather than to a fare sale. Every night between those dates has to be accounted for somewhere: a booking, a named host, or a line in the covering letter saying you are driving and where.
Checking it takes under a minute. It moves the file into the territory INZ handles under character, where a later application can be declined for what you filed years before. That is the reason to buy a booking from anyone: not the PDF, the record standing behind it.
Every figure and quotation above was read at the Immigration New Zealand and ACC pages listed below on 04-09-2026. INZ fees, decision times and instruction wording change without notice, and INZ can ask any applicant for more than the checklist shows — open the sources before you rely on a number. Nothing here predicts an outcome, and no document we prepare can influence one.
