Athens three nights, Santorini two, Mykonos two, one more in Athens before the flight home. Eight nights. The folder that reaches the counter has hotel confirmations for four of them, because the island nights were still being argued about in the family WhatsApp group when the appointment came round. That gap is the most common way a Greek file gets sent back, and it is not a judgement call — it is arithmetic anyone can do in ten seconds.
Greece issues a uniform Schengen short-stay visa, so the categories on the list will look familiar. Three things about it are not: the Greek route out of India is not the one you used for France or Germany, the insurance rule carries an India-only clause, and a Greek holiday puts more nights in more places than almost any other Schengen trip.
Every Greek file in India is decided at one desk
Greece does not use VFS Global in India. Applications go through Global Visa Center World, which describes itself on its Indian site as the exclusive external service provider of the Greek consular authorities in India, with visa application centres in fifteen cities: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Puducherry and Pune.
Fifteen doors, one room behind them. The centre’s own processing notice of 17-03-2025 says an application lodged anywhere other than New Delhi is dispatched first to the New Delhi centre and forwarded to the Embassy of Greece — Consular Office there the following day, and tells applicants outside New Delhi to add five extra days to their minimum processing time. Your passport then sits at the Greek Embassy until it has been processed.
“Flight reservation of return or round ticket”
That phrase is the Embassy’s, not ours. Its list of supporting documents for applicants in India opens with proof of means of transport, and the line underneath asks for a flight reservation of a return or round trip. Where the applicant is travelling to several Schengen states it also wants the internal legs evidenced — an intra-Schengen flight reservation, a train itinerary or a car rental.
So the document Greece names is a reservation, and the timeline above is why that is sane rather than a loophole: you are showing a plan across a window that can run to 45 calendar days, on dates a refusal would make worthless. Buying the ticket first turns an unanswered question into a non-refundable one.
There is now a routing worth knowing about. AEGEAN’s announcement of its A321neo XLR deployment put five weekly Athens–New Delhi services from March 2026 and three weekly Athens–Mumbai from May — the first nonstop link between India and Greece. A single-carrier reservation into ATH, with no third country in the middle, is the cleanest thing to hand a consular officer. Availability moves, so check your dates; a connection through a Gulf or European hub is still perfectly ordinary on a Greek file.
The islands are cheap to add to the plan and expensive to leave off the file
Under proof of lodging, the Embassy’s list accepts hotel reservations, the rental of a holiday home, or a campus residence reservation, and adds that an applicant travelling to several Schengen states must show lodging in each of them. Santorini and Mykonos are not several Schengen states — they are Greece. They are still nights, and nights are what get counted.
The three failures we see on Greek files: accommodation that starts the day after the flight lands, because nobody counted the overnight sector as a night; an island stay booked for two nights against three days on the plan; and a confirmation nobody but the person who printed it can check. The first two are fixable in an afternoon.
The ferry out of Piraeus and the short hops to SKG, HER or JTR are how Greek itineraries actually work, and the Embassy’s tourism section leaves room for that: for journeys undertaken for the purpose of tourism it asks for a travel agency certificate confirming an organised trip, or any other appropriate document indicating the travel plans. A day-wise itinerary is that other appropriate document. Write it so every date has a bed and a way of reaching it, and so the flight dates, the hotel dates and the plan agree line for line.
The insurance clause that applies only to files lodged in India
The Schengen requirement is the usual one, stated plainly: travel medical insurance covering the territory of all Member States and the entire intended stay, covering repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment, minimum coverage €30,000. The Greek centre adds that the insurer must have a representative office in an EU country.
Then comes the sentence most applicants never read. Under the heading important information for applications lodged in India, the Consular Section notice says that as of 01-10-2013, travel medical insurances will be accepted only if they are issued by specific Indian insurance companies, and the Greek visa centre publishes that list. So the check on a Greek file is not only the amount on the certificate — it is the name of the company that issued it.
We issue travel insurance through a licensed insurer, and the certificate reaches you with that insurer named on it. Put the name against the published list before you file, and ask us whose paper your policy would be written on before you pay rather than after.
Greece stopped being a Schengen island on 01-01-2025
Greece’s only EU land neighbour is Bulgaria, and until land border checks were lifted on 01-01-2025 that border was a controlled one — you reached Greece from the rest of the free-movement area by air or by sea. Sofia, Plovdiv and Rila are now an overland add-on to an Athens trip on one visa. The file gets no shorter for it: the extra nights need lodging like every other night, and which consulate examines the application is decided on the trip as a whole.
That question catches people out in a specific way here. Flying Delhi–Frankfurt– Athens does not make Germany your destination; a stop where you never clear immigration is not a stay. Where purpose and length of stay point at Greece, the Greek file is the right file, whichever country’s aircraft carries you in. One more change sits at the border rather than in the file: the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10-04-2026, replacing the passport stamp with a digital record of every entry and exit. It registers your crossing; it does not approve your trip, and it adds nothing to the checklist above. It does mean your dates are counted by a machine now — one more reason for the reservation, the hotels and the itinerary to say the same thing.
What we can put in the folder
Nothing in that folder decides the outcome; the consular office in New Delhi does, on the whole picture. What a coherent set of documents removes is the contradiction that makes an officer read the rest of your file twice.
